The Christmas-tide of Shanghai Rotary Club – Project “Toys Hospital” in 1930s-40s

The Shanghai Rotary Club, founded in 1919, conducted an annual Christmas tradition of giving toys to needy children. Starting in 1932, the club initiated the “Toys Hospital” project, collecting broken toys via local newspapers, refurbishing them, and redistributing them in Shanghai. By 1935, over 8,000 toys had been restored and distributed. The project grew to include community activities like needlework and poster contests to encourage donations. Despite the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937, the project continued alongside relief efforts for war refugees. In 1940, under Project Chair Restel O. Scott, about 12,000 toys were repaired and redistributed, with support from events at cinemas such as the Nanking and Metropole Theatres, led by members including T. J. Holt and Percy Chu. The initiative ended following the Pacific War outbreak and Japanese occupation of Shanghai in late 1941.

A partir de 1932, iniciou o projeto “Toys Hospital”, que recolhia brinquedos quebrados por meio de jornais locais, reparava-os e os redistribuía em Xangai. Em 1935, mais de 8.000 brinquedos já haviam sido restaurados e entregues. O projeto cresceu, incluindo atividades comunitárias como concursos de bordado e cartazes para incentivar doações. Apesar da eclosão da Segunda Guerra Sino-Japonesa em 1937, o projeto continuou junto a esforços de auxílio a refugiados de guerra. Em 1940, sob o comando do presidente do projeto Restel O.
