Father Peter Alphonsus Reilly (1912–1994), a Maryknoll priest from Boston, served in the Catholic mission in Wuchow (梧州), Guangxi Province, starting in 1941. During World War II, he worked behind Japanese lines and helped Bishop Frederick Anthony Donaghy establish Sacred Heart Primary School, Wuchow’s first Catholic mission school. After facing Communist persecution and imprisonment, he was expelled to Hong Kong in 1952. In Hong Kong, Father Reilly founded the Maryknoll Fathers’ School in 1957, the first co-educational Catholic school in the region, supervising it until his death. He also established St. John the Baptist Parish in Kwun Tong and multiple primary schools. Uniquely, he was the only foreigner on Hong Kong’s Language Board of Examiners. Father Reilly’s lifelong dedication to education and pastoral care left a significant impact on Hong Kong’s Catholic and educational communities.
