Nanking Rotary Club – Drought Relief Benefit Ball-Concert 1934

In 1934, the Nanking Rotary Club organized a drought relief fund drive to assist around 200,000 famine-affected farmers in the Nanking region after a severe summer drought, especially impacting Kiangning Hsien. The Ningshu Agricultural Relief Association, led by Rotarian D. Y. Lin and treasurer R. S. Hall, provided free seed but faced resource limits. To broaden aid, the Club formed an Emergency Relief Committee and held a Drought Relief Ball-Concert on October 30 at the Foreign Office reception hall, with patronage from President Wang Ching Wei. The event featured international music, attracted 450 attendees, and raised over $4,000—twice the initial goal. Government officials and diplomats actively participated, with Wang endorsing the Club’s supplementary relief efforts.
