Since 2000, the Rotary Club of Macau has led a decade-long effort to rebuild and improve schools in Du’an Yao Autonomous County, a remote area in China where farming families earn around US$100 annually. The club renovated eight schools, including Yong Ping Primary School and Du’an Ethnic Experimental Middle School, transforming unsafe, dilapidated buildings into modern campuses serving hundreds of students. The project involved multiple Rotary clubs from Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, and Taiwan and was supported by $5,000 in district grants. Significant funding from Bill Benter, former president of Kowloon North Rotary Club, enabled the completion of a science and technology middle school in 2005. The improvements have led to higher student test scores, increased university attendance, and recognition from local officials. The Rotary Club continues to offer scholarships and support, fostering rapid educational and social progress in this impoverished mountain region.
