The term “Rotary” (扶轮, Fú lún) in China has no registered trademark or patent as of 2013. Introduced in Shanghai in 1919 by American expatriates, the Rotary Club was officially named “Fú lún Shè” in 1921-22 by Chinese members Wang Zhengtíng and Yu Fuzhuó, drawing from a classical phrase symbolizing cooperation and collective strength. From 1911, several independent “Rotary Schools” (扶轮学校) were established, mainly educating railway workers’ families, with the first Rotary Middle School founded in Tianjin in 1918. These schools used the term metaphorically without formal Rotary Club affiliation. The concept of “Fú lún” originates from ancient literature over 2,000 years old, symbolizing the hub of a wheel and mutual aid. Early Chinese Rotary Clubs and these schools were distinct but reflected a blending of Western organizational models with Chinese cultural traditions during the Republic era.

Introduzido em Xangai em 1919 por expatriados americanos, o Rotary Club foi oficialmente nomeado “Fú lún Shè” em 1921-22 pelos membros chineses Wang Zhengtíng e Yu Fuzhuó, baseado em uma frase clássica que simboliza cooperação e força coletiva. Desde 1911, várias “Escolas Rotary” (扶轮学校) independentes foram criadas, principalmente para educar famílias de trabalhadores ferroviários, sendo a primeira Escola Secundária Rotary fundada em Tianjin em 1918. Essas escolas usavam o termo de forma metafórica, sem ligação formal com os Rotary Clubs. O conceito de “Fú lún” tem origem em literatura antiga de mais de 2.000 anos, simbolizando o centro da roda e ajuda mútua. Os primeiros Rotary Clubs chineses e essas escolas eram entidades distintas, refletindo a fusão de modelos ocidentais com tradições culturais chinesas na era da República.
