Dr. Kuo Ping-Wen (1880–1969), a prominent Chinese educator and reformer from Shanghai, significantly modernized Chinese higher education and promoted Sino-American cultural exchange. Educated in the United States under Presbyterian and Boxer Indemnity scholarships, he earned an education Ph.D. from Columbia University Teachers College in 1914. Returning to China, he transformed Nanking Higher Normal School into National Southeast University, serving as Chancellor (1921–1925), and founded Shanghai College of Commerce. Kuo introduced American university models, advocated coeducation, democratic governance, and integrated humanities with sciences. Internationally, he was vice-chairman of the World Education Congress, co-founded the China Institute in America, and held important government and UN relief roles. His contributions shaped Chinese higher education reforms and fostered lasting cross-cultural academic ties.
