John Curtis (1880–1962), an Irish missionary and former soccer player, was Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Chekiang (Zhejiang), China, from 1928 to 1950. He co-founded the Hangchow Rotary Club in 1932, the first Mandarin-speaking Rotary club. Curtis’s mission spanned turbulent periods including Japanese occupation from 1937 and the Chinese Civil War. Educated at Trinity College Dublin and ordained in 1904, he served initially in Fujian before his bishopric. During World War II, Curtis was interned by the Japanese in Shanghai and Hong Kong but continued pastoral work. After the war, he helped rebuild the Rotary Club until the Communist takeover ended its activities and forced his departure in 1950. He advocated for a truly Chinese and independent church. Returning to England, Curtis became a vicar until 1957 and died in 1962, remembered for his religious service, missionary leadership, and early football career.
