The Rotary Club of Hong Kong Northeast launched a project in January 1997 to fight illiteracy in remote Chinese villages, starting with Ruyuan County, home to about 200,000 impoverished and largely illiterate residents. The club raised $50,000 and received an additional $20,000 from the government to open the first school in the area, providing furnishings, books, and resources, while local authorities maintain the school. Meanwhile, in the Philippines, the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro East Urban responded to literacy challenges among children of migrant workers in Villanueva. Starting in 1996, they partnered with local businesses and government to open the town’s first public library in mid-1997. The club continues to supply the library with books and furniture, supporting education and literacy in the community.
