In late 1962, the Rotary Club of Hong Kong Island West built a Rotary Village on a hillside at Mount Davis to provide permanent homes for 64 families (337 people) displaced by Typhoon Wanda. This typhoon, the strongest recorded in Hong Kong, struck on September 1, 1962, with winds reaching 261 km/h and severe storm surges that damaged thousands of homes and left 72,000 homeless. The disaster caused 434 deaths and extensive economic losses estimated at HK$2.6 billion (US$335 million today). During his 1963 visit, Rotary International President Nitish C. Laharry praised the housing project and urged ongoing support. The initiative was featured in the 1962-1963 Rotary Annual Report and awarded “Project of the Year” at the District 345 Conference in Taipei.
