The Right Reverend Bishop John Wesley Gowdy (1869–1963), a Scottish-American missionary and educator, significantly influenced Methodist Christianity and education in Foochow (福州), Fujian Province, China. Arriving in 1902, he taught and served as president of the Anglo-Chinese College (1904–1923) before becoming the first president of Fukien Christian University (1923–1927). In 1930, Gowdy was elected bishop by the China Central Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church—the first bishop elected outside the U.S.—serving until 1941. He advanced Christian mission and education during turbulent times and briefly joined the Foochow Rotary Club. In 1944, Chiang Kai-Shek awarded him the Order of the Brilliant Star for his service. Gowdy retired to Florida and passed away in 1963. His archival papers reside at Emory University.
