Bishop Alfred Alonzo Gilman (Wuchang/Hankow) 孟良佐主教(武昌/漢口)

Alfred Alonzo Gilman (1878–1966) was an American Episcopal missionary and bishop who played a significant role in China’s Hankow Diocese. He served as Suffragan Bishop from 1925 to 1937 and then as Bishop until 1948. Gilman was a founding member and vice-president of the Wuchang Rotary Club and later joined the Hankow Rotary Club, which suspended activity during the Sino-Japanese War and closed permanently by 1950 due to political changes. Born in Nebraska, he studied at the University of Nebraska and Philadelphia Divinity School before arriving in China in 1902. Gilman married Gertrude Carter in 1905 and worked as a missionary priest in Changsha, designing Trinity Church there. He also led Boone University (1917) and Hua Chung University (1924–1929), a Christian union university in Central China. Hua Chung University ultimately ceased operations after the Communist takeover in 1949. Gilman died in New Jersey in 1966.
