Chungking Rotarians Launch School for Deaf Children

The Chungking Rotary Club was founded on June 3, 1937, in Sichuan Province as the 24th Rotary Club in the Republic of China, sponsored by the Hankow Rotary Club and admitted to Rotary International on November 18, 1937. It had 30 multinational charter members and met weekly at Sullivan’s Restaurant until it ceased operations on December 21, 1950. During the 1943 Japanese bombings, club members—including military, diplomatic, and missionary personnel—demonstrated solidarity, receiving support such as a $1,500 donation from the Philadelphia Rotary Club to aid those in need. J. Harry Haines, president from 1946 to 1947, was a New Zealand-born missionary and later director of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Known for his dedication to humanitarian aid and economic self-development, Haines was influential in bridging wealth gaps and promoting mission work until his death in 2007.
