China invited senior Rotary leaders to Beijing in 2000

In November 2000, Rotary International’s President-elect Richard D. King and seven senior leaders visited China after an official invitation by the Chinese government, approved by the State Council. The visit, supported diplomatically by Christopher Bo Bramsen, the Royal Danish Ambassador, marked a landmark moment in China-Rotary relations. RI President Frank Devlyn also joined the delegation following efforts by the Beijing Fellowship Group (BFG), a multinational Rotary community in Beijing. The leaders met with top officials including Vice-Premier Li Lanqing and State Councillor Ismail Amat to discuss resuming Rotary activities on the mainland, where no clubs had existed since 1952. The visit also touched on foreign NGO laws and future cooperation. After visiting China, the Rotary delegation traveled to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, engaging with local Rotary members and emphasizing the organization’s regional presence.
