The Soochow Rotary Club (吳縣扶輪社), sponsored by the Shanghai Rotary Club, was officially admitted to Rotary International on November 11, 1936, as Club #4053, becoming the 21st club in District 81. Located in the walled city of Wu Xian (吳縣), the club’s formation was proposed in 1935 by Ernest F. Harris, with assistance from local prominent figures including Dr. Yang Yung-Ching (楊永清), President of Soochow University, and Revd. Francis A. Cox. The club held its organizational meeting in June 1936 and quickly grew, with charter members representing varied professions and sectors in Soochow (蘇州), Jiangsu Province. The club received its charter in a formal ceremony on January 16, 1937, attended by over 100 guests, including representatives from nearby clubs and local dignitaries. Early community service efforts included aid to prisoners and support for rickshaw pullers. The Rotary’s presence reflected Soochow’s rich history and emerging modern civic spirit during a turbulent era in China’s history.
