Birth of Foochow Rotary Club (福州扶輪社)

The Rotary Club of Foochow (福州扶輪社) was founded on June 21, 1933, as the eighth club in the Republic of China and the first in Fujian Province’s capital, Foochow (Fuzhou). Efforts to establish the club began in 1925 and resumed in early 1933, led by local businessmen and officials including Harold Kemp Prossor and E. H. Munson. After recruiting a diverse group of Chinese and foreign charter members and studying Rotary principles, the club was officially chartered by Rotary International on July 31, 1933 (Charter #1913(b)). Douglas C. Howland, Rotary’s Asiatic Secretary, visited in June 1933 to support and guide the club. Amid political unrest and economic challenges, Foochow Rotary promoted fellowship among Chinese and foreign communities, becoming a key civic organization by 1934 and hosting leaders like Governor General Chen Yi, fostering collaboration in business, education, and professional fields.

Os esforços para estabelecer o clube começaram em 1925 e foram retomados no início de 1933, liderados por empresários e autoridades locais, incluindo Harold Kemp Prossor e E. H. Munson.
