Dr. Robert Earl Beddoe (1882–1952), an American Southern Baptist medical missionary, served in China for nearly 40 years. Arriving in 1909 under the Baptist General Convention of Texas, he became the medical superintendent of Stout Memorial Hospital in Wuchow (梧州), Guangxi, in 1918. Beddoe expanded the hospital and was a founding member and president (1937–1938) of the Wuchow Rotary Club, which supported medical aid for the poor. Despite personal losses and health issues, he introduced innovations like female nurses on male wards and remained committed to local healthcare. Returning to the U.S. in 1948, he taught hospital administration at Oklahoma Baptist University until his death in 1952. His work and legacy are detailed in Helen Thames Raley’s 1969 biography, Doctor in an Old World.
