2nd Rotary District Conference in China – Nanking 1937

The Second District Conference of Rotary International’s 81st District was held in Nanking, Republic of China, from April 11-13, 1937. This district comprised clubs from China, British Hong Kong, and the Philippine Commonwealth. The event was presided over by District Governor Dr. Fong Foo-Sec of Shanghai Rotary Club and hosted by Nanking Rotary Club under Hsu Mo. Approximately 300 delegates attended the conference at the International Club, with banquets attended by Nanking’s mayor and Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Ch’ung-Hui. U.S. Congressman Lyndon B. Johnson was a notable guest. Eight months later, Nanking was devastated during the Japanese invasion and subsequent massacre. The Nanking Rotary Club ceased operations by 1943, briefly reviving after World War II. Rotarian George Ashmore Fitch, director of the Nanking Safety Zone, documented and exposed Japanese war crimes committed during this period.
