Rotary distinguished itself from social clubs by openly promoting business among members, based on a principle of helpfulness and altruism through a “rotation of business” without expecting direct return. Membership was limited to one executive per occupation, creating a representative group for discussing business and public affairs. Over time, Rotary expanded to include civic and charitable activities. The 1930 statement defined Rotary’s original goals as promoting members’ business interests, encouraging fellowship, broadening business understanding, and supporting community welfare to develop better citizenship.
