Hong Kong Northwest Rotary Club – Project on Health Awareness of Hong Kong Elderly (1993)

In 1993, the Rotary Club of Hong Kong Northwest launched a health awareness project for underprivileged elderly residents under President John M.K. Lei. Initially providing health check-ups for 500 elders, the project expanded to over 1,900 participants through partnerships with local laboratories, the Hong Kong Society for the Aged (SAGE), and the University of Hong Kong. Starting in early 1994 with blood sample analysis, it developed into a comprehensive study including lifestyle questionnaires and clinical tests. The initiative featured medical seminars and substantial volunteer involvement from professionals and Rotary members. Findings were shared through reports and talks, with plans for a publication to guide elder healthcare improvements. Addressing Hong Kong’s growing elderly population, the project was supported by prominent figures like Governor Christopher Patten in 1996, contributing valuable data for future health planning.
