On February 23, 1905, Paul Harris and three associates held the first Rotary Club meeting in Room 711 of Chicago’s Unity Building, marking Rotary’s founding date. The initial members were Silvester Schiele, Gus Loehr, Hiram Shorey, and soon after Harry Ruggles joined. Harris aimed to create a club of business professionals promoting social friendship and mutual support. The early meetings featured personal storytelling and outlined the club’s purpose focused on giving and friendship, despite some seeing it as business network-focused. Attendance was mandatory, enforced by fines, and membership was initially limited to one year to ensure active involvement. The founders, from small-town backgrounds and various professions, established Rotary’s core values of fellowship, helpfulness, and community. This modest gathering laid the groundwork for what would become a global organization devoted to service and camaraderie.
