Chan Yat-Sun (1919–2007), MBE, JP, was a prominent Hong Kong rural leader, politician, and businessman, known as the “King of the New Territories.” Originating from So Kwun Wat village near Tuen Mun, he served as Chairman of the Tuen Mun Rural Committee (1954–1970) and Heung Yee Kuk (1962–1964; 1968–1978), representing New Territories rural interests. Chan founded the New Territories Rotary Club in 1969 and was its inaugural president. He supported the colonial government during the 1967 Leftist riots and received an MBE in 1968. Chan championed indigenous villagers’ rights, helped establish the New Territories Small House Policy, and promoted regional development projects. He participated in Sino-British talks on Hong Kong’s future and founded the Federation for the Stability of Hong Kong in 1991. Additionally, he co-founded the Yan Oi Tong charity. Chan remained politically active until retiring and passed away in 2007, honored by government and community leaders.
